Hello again, I hope you have been playing golf and having fun! In my last article I spoke about how the golf swing relies on spinal rotation to keep a consistent swing path. In the same subject, but to a more specific region, an often over looked and misdiagnosed condition of the sacroiliac joint is also a big contributor to a poor spinal rotation. Let me explain, the sacroiliac is made up of three bones, the right and left ilium (hip) and a triangular bone called the sacrum. The L5 disc sits on top of the base of the triangular sacrum and above that stacks the rest of your spine. The sacrum is supposed to have the ability to move within the confines of the right and left hip. Due to a wide array of trauma, beginning as early as learning to walk, the sacrum can become fully or partially subluxated. This is why chiropractic is so important even when we are children. To correct our spinal subluxations as they occur, in most cases, insures a faster stabilization, as the muscle memory has not taken over holding us in this mal-positioned state. We put our bodies through a myriad of mini traumas growing up. Our bodies are resilient, but each micro trauma to our spine accumulates to the degree in which it causes spinal misalignment, which then becomes acute and eventually chronic, causing aches and pains in our daily routines. If not caught and treated properly this condition can cause a multitude of other ailments. When we are talking about the sacrum in this text, you can see symptoms such as leg, hip and low back pain, numbness, stiffness and swelling often occur. The not so obvious symptoms are knee and foot pain and constipation. On the chart below you can recognize what these can do to your rotation during your golf swing. If you have a subluxated sacrum you may have difficulty achieving a solid hip turn, your body now has to compensate making your spine and knees work harder which in turn causes more back and knee pain. A specific 5 minute adjustment can begin to bring back the correct positioning of the sacrum and lessen the trauma to the rest of the body, helping all your joints feel better. This malady is often misdiagnosed; but can be detected by an experienced Chiropractor through x-ray and a few diagnostic tests. The treatment will vary per patient but basically consists of a specific adjustment, which can be followed by rehabilitative exercise, (that you can do at home), and a few supplements such as glucosamine chondroitin and MSM. Always consult with your health care professional before starting any supplemental therapies. Dr. Marc Gray, chiropractic physician at Suntree Chiropractic in Suntree Business Park, has had 30 + years of diagnosing and successfully treating this condition. Our Proprioception impulse VOL. 4
I was standing on the practice range the other day and to my left was a medical doctor and to my right was another Chiropractic physician. We went through our routines and chatted between shots about what ‘is’ the golf swing, how does it happen? We were speaking generally about technique, but during the conversation it occurred to me why so many golfers treat with Chiropractors. Proprioception
The golf swing would not be possible, or for
that matter any specific action, without our bodies proprioception impulse.
This impulse is the one that *1 ‘Even with our eyes closed, we have a sense of body position. Muscles,
tendons, joints and the inner ear contain proprioceptors, also known as stretch
receptors, which relay positional information to our brains. Our brains then
information and provide us with a sense of body orientation and movement’. *2 ‘The awareness of posture and changes in equilibrium makes us aware of position, weight, and resistance of objects as they relate to the body’. In golf, the player’s ability to co-ordinate all the proprioceptive impulses received by our brain and use them to complete a task such as a golf swing is paramount to the success of the game. This leads me back to Chiropractic and the thousands of benefits it creates for our bodies which we turn into actions.
The body’s built in proprioceptive system that controls and coordinates every movement and every function we complete is the central nervous system, which is attached to the muscular system and it gives the body the ability to balance among other things. Awareness of body part positioning is also very important for the ability to regulate muscle tone. This is very relevant in golf, it’s called playing by feel; touch around the green. Putting is very proprioceptive dependent. If proprioception is disturbed then so is muscle strength. Muscle inhibition (weakness) is the direct result of abnormal proprioception.
The proprioception signal can be altered by biomechanical changes in one or more joints in the body. Shoulders, knees, hips, spinal joints, (vertebrae), or problems in the middle ear can affect balance and create compensatory problems. This signal is much like our bodies GPS and when interrupted, it interferes with the commands we think we are sending from our brain. An example; I went through my check list before hitting the ball and I still cannot ……. Fill in the blank. It could be your lack of agility or maybe your preceptors are blocked, both issues can be helped by Chiropractic, it’s what we do!
